Choroidal Sclerosis and Choroidal Atrophy

Abstract
In case of choroidal degenerative diseases that may result in choroidal sclerosis, the basic pathology begins in the retinal pigment epithelium. After the loss of retinal pigment epithelium, the choriocapillaris layer is affected and atrophies develop. In the advanced stages of the disease, large choroidal vessels present a sclerotic appearance due to degeneration. This pathology has been known for many years and the disease was analyzed under three headings as central areolar, peripapillary and diffuse form. Today, it is known that this pathology may accompany various ocular pathologies. For this reason, when a choroidal sclerosis is encountered, a detailed examination should be made and pathologies which may be the underlying cause should be investigated.
