Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Associated Uveitis: Diagnosis, Clinical Features and Treatment

In Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), uveitis is the most common extra articular finding, seen in 3.3-38% of the cases. As the non-granulomatous chronic anterior uveitis has an insidious onset, complications are frequently encountered at the time of diagnosis. Therefore screening for uveitis is essential in JIA cases at specified intervals. After diagnosis first approach for management is topical corticosteroid therapy, but if the inflammation cannot be controlled or if there are already complications at the time of diagnosis, immunosuppressive treatment is mandatory. First choice for this kind of treatment is methotrexate, and biologic agents like adalimumab or infliximab are the second step. Surgery is necessary for the complications cataract and glaucoma.
