Genetic and Risk Factors in Retinopathy of Prematurity
Abstract
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is the leading cause of life-long visual impairment in children, affecting newborns with low gestational age and birth weight. ROP is a complex disease caused by impaired normal retinal vascularization in premature newborns, and various risk factors and genetic variants have been described in etiopathogenesis. In this review, environmental and genetic risk factors reported to play a role in the pathogenesis of ROP are summarized.
