Optic Neuropathy in Hereditary Polyneuropathies
Abstract
Hereditary polyneuropathies can represent in a variety of ways-most typically, with slowly progressive distal and symmetric muscle weakness, atrophy, and sensory loss. Association of optic neuropathy and/or optic atrophy with hereditary polyneuropathies have also been described in different case reports and case series. This article outlines optic neuropathy in hereditary polyneuropathies especially stressing on three diseases (hereditary optic atrophy with progressive deafness and polyneuropathy, hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy VI with optic atrophy, hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type III or familial dysautonomia).
