Drusen Types and Imaging Characteristics
Abstract
The formation of drusen in aging eye is characterized by accumulation of extracellular material underneath the retinal pigment epithelium. Usually drusen is evaluated in association with dry age related macular degeneration. Some types of drusen are recognised as normal consequence of aging, while some drusen types are associated with various inherited disorders and systemic conditions. The subtypes of clinically detectable deposit, seen usually in the context of ageing or age related macular degeneration, are described in detail, together with appearance on imaging modalities.
