Ocular Involvement, Prognosis and Complications in Behçet’s Disease

Ocular Behçet syndrome, which may develop both in children and adults, has a high ocular morbidity. Ocular involvement develops in about half of Behçet patients and various symptoms and signs are present as a result of unilateral or bilateral attacks of anterior, intermediate or posterior uveitis. The syndromic process of the disease is characterized by un-predictable and not self-limiting attacks from one eye to the other. The severity of the disease also changes from patient to patient. Although ocular involvement generally occurs after oromucocutanous involvement, it may be the first presentation in some cases and the prognosis is bad if the follow up is not sufficient. The prognosis is good in cases of anterior uveitis whereas posterior and panuveitis have bad prognosis as a result of complications. Hopefully, recent years have demonstrated good results on the visual prognosis with the use of biologic agents.
