Newly Developed Therapies for Uveitis Associated With Behçet’s Disease

Abstract
Behçet’s disease is a multisystemic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology with chronic course and exacerbations. Multiple proinflammatory molecules, chiefly tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-) alfa, interleukin- (IL-) 1ß, and IL-6 are oversecreted in Behçet’s disease. TNF-alfa inhibitors and interpheron-? are routinely used for treatment of Behçet’s uveitis. But some patients might not respond to these agents, or the beneficial response might drop off over time. Therefore additional therapies for refractory patients with Behçet’s uveitis are needed. In this review, the studies about preexisting and recently developing biological agents for treatment of Behçet’s uveitis, except TNF-alfa inhibitors are summarized.

Keywords: Behçet disease, uveitis, interleukin, CD 20, mTOR inhibitor.
