Pharmacological Vitreolysis and Pneumatic Vitreolysis

Abstract
Treatment of vitreoretinal interface diseases can be successfully performed with surgical methods, but serious complications could be seen in this method. As an alternative to surgery, pharmacologic vitreolysis has been developed. In this method, the vitreous structure is chemically altered without any need for surgery, thus vitreous can be effectively and safely separated from the retina. Ocriplasmin has been detected as most successful agent in the literature. Pneumatic vitreolysis is another treatment method used in the treatment of vitreoretinal interface diseases. Pneumatic vitreolysis is an intravitreal injection of an expansile gas bubble that can be used to massage the vitreomacular interface thereby yielding traction release. In this study, recent studies evaluating pharmacologic vitreolysis and pneumatic vitreolysis methods were evaluated.
